Suede Care 101 — Brush, Erase, Repeat

Full-grain suede is what gives a sneaker its hand. It's also the part most people give up on after the first scuff. Here's the routine.

The three tools

  • A horsehair brush — for everyday lift and direction
  • A suede eraser block — for stubborn marks and dirt rings
  • A water repellent spray — for prevention before storms

Weekly: brush in one direction

Always brush in the same direction the nap lays. Two minutes is enough. This keeps the suede looking awake and stops dust from compacting into the fibers.

Mark on the toe? Erase it

Press the eraser into the mark and rub gently in small circles. The block lifts the dirt and a fresh bit of suede comes up. Brush after to reset the nap direction.

Before the first big rain

Spray a thin even coat of water repellent and let it cure overnight. One coat per season is plenty. Don't drench the upper.

What to avoid

No water. No detergent. No leather conditioner. Suede is split leather with the rough side out — products meant for smooth leather will gum up the nap.
